Expertise: Spinal cord

Dr Peter Shortland
My current projects include neuroanatomical and neuophysiological studies of somatosensory processing in the spinal cord and trigeminal system, as well as identifying factors which are responsible for the abnormal responses to injury, to reduce/alleviate neuropathic pain and to try to restore normal function after injury. Other interests include the study of neuropathic pain following peripheral nerve or root injury; identifying factors which are responsible for the abnormal responses to injury, and using pharmacological agents to ameliorate pain and to try to restore normal function after injury.

Dr Xuenong Bo
My research mainly focuses on promoting axonal regeneration after spinal cord injury. One line of my research is to manipulate the molecules in neurons and glial cells using gene-targeting techniques to change the neurons' regeneration capacity or to modify the environment in the central nervous system to facilitate axonal regeneration. The second line of research is to genetically modify Schwann cells to improve their survival and migration after transplantation into injured spinal cords. The third line of research is to study the roles of purinoceptors in the pathophysiological mechanisms of nerve injury and to develop new treatments for nerve injury.
