Expertise: Tobacco dependence
Prof Peter Hajek
My research interests include addictive and health behaviours, especially smoking and weight management. I have been involved in the development and first published trials of several smoking cessation treatments now used worldwide, including nicotine inhalators, nicotine nasal spray, nicotine lozenges, dextrose and varenicline. I also studied behavioural treatments, both intensive clinical approaches and brief interventions in primary care. Another strand of my research is concerned with an understanding of the quitting process and relapse, with particular focus on tobacco withdrawal symptoms. Other interests include use of groups to help people change their health behaviours, and research in weight management.
Prof Hayden Mcrobbie
One of my main current research interests concerns treatment approaches that could help highly dependent smokers. In my previous work, I have examined brief treatments practicable routinely on a large scale and more intensive clinical interventions, both behavioural and pharmacological, including first published trials of new nicotine replacement formulations. I am also involved in weight management and I am currently leading a randomised controlled trial comparing weight loss in a group-based weight management programme with a practice nurse intervention.
